Bangladesh Crisis: Targeting of Hindu Homes and Temples Amid Political Unrest

In the wake of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's ousting, Bangladesh has witnessed a surge in attacks against minority communities, particularly Hindus. Reports indicate that on Monday, at least ten Hindu temples were vandalized and numerous homes and businesses owned by Hindus were targeted by violent mobs.

Witnesses have described scenes of chaos as buildings associated with Hasina's Awami League party were set ablaze and looted across the country. The violence, which escalated after mass protests led to Hasina's removal, has led to significant damage and casualties.

The Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council reported that at least 97 locations were attacked over Monday and Tuesday. Among the victims was a Hindu man who was beaten to death in the southern district of Bagerhat.

Rights groups and international diplomats have expressed grave concern over the escalating violence. Transparency International Bangladesh's head, Iftekharuzzaman, condemned the attacks as a violation of the principles of anti-discrimination and human rights.

The U.S. Embassy in Dhaka and European Union diplomats have both called for calm and restraint. The EU's ambassador to Bangladesh, Charles Whiteley, emphasized the need for all parties to reject communal violence and respect the rights of all citizens.

The unrest has resulted in at least 122 deaths, marking Monday as the deadliest day since the protests began in early July. The violence has also extended to the Ahmadis, a minority Muslim sect, with reports of their homes being set on fire.

In a notable incident, the residence of celebrated Hindu musician Rahul Ananda, who had previously met with French President Emmanuel Macron, was among those destroyed.

Indian Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar has announced that New Delhi is closely monitoring the situation and remains deeply concerned about the status of minorities in Bangladesh, stressing the importance of restoring law and order.

As the situation continues to develop, the international community remains vigilant and calls for a peaceful resolution to the ongoing crisis.
