Paris 2024 Olympics: Indian Men’s 4x400m Relay Team Misses Final by Narrow Margin
In a dramatic turn of events at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the Indian men’s 4x400m relay team narrowly missed out on a place in the final by just three-tenths of a second. Clocking a season's best time of 3:00.58, the Indian quartet finished fourth in their heat at the Stade de France on Friday.
Competing in a heat that included strong contenders such as Belgium, France, and Nigeria, the team comprising Muhammed Anas, Rajesh Ramesh, Amoj Jacob, and Muhammed Ajmal fell short by 0.32 seconds from the cutoff time of 3:00.26 set by Italy. This result placed India 10th in the overall standings.
Italy secured the final spot from the second heat with their time of 3:00.26, edging out India’s performance. Germany, finishing just ahead of India, was only 0.03 seconds behind Italy’s time. The Indian team had set a national and Asian record with a time of 2:59.05 at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest last year. A repeat of this effort would have seen them qualify for the final.
In the second heat, France led with a time of 2:59.53, followed by Nigeria at 2:59.81. However, Nigeria's subsequent disqualification led to South Africa being awarded a spot in the final, making it a nine-team race. Belgium ultimately finished second with a time of 2:59.84, while Botswana, the Tokyo 2020 bronze medallists, topped the overall heats with a time of 2:57.76.
Muhammed Ajmal delivered the standout performance for India, running the second leg in 44.55 seconds.
In contrast, the Indian women’s 4x400m relay team, consisting of Jyothika Sri Dandi, MR Poovamma, Vithya Ramraj, and Subha Venkatesan, finished eighth and last in their heat with a time of 3:32.51, nearly six seconds behind the national record of 3:26.89 set at the Athens 2004 Olympics. Jyothika Sri Dandi recorded the best time among the Indian women with 51.30 seconds.
The second heat was dominated by Jamaica with a time of 3:24.92, ahead of the Netherlands and Ireland. The USA, the defending champions, led the overall heats with the fastest time of 3:21.44. India ended their athletics campaign at Paris 2024 in 15th place overall.
With these results, India’s journey in athletics at the Paris 2024 Olympics came to a close.
